The Friend: Socially-Intelligent Tutoring and Collaboration

چکیده
Motivation as key factor for maintaining effective learning must be maintained during computer-supported learning. For this, we attempt to investigate the benefits of a socially intelligent tutoring agent that goes beyond attending to aspects of an individual student, the tutoring friend. In a computer-supported learning system, a tutoring friend is an artificial agent that manages relationships with learners, monitors their social behavior, and is able to assemble socially-aware groups for peer collaboration. We hypothesize that intelligent tutoring friends can motivate students to long-term participation by the virtue of social affordances they provide.

Feasibility of a Socially Intelligent Tutor
We present feasibility study of an intelligent tutoring system Peoplia in which a socially intelligent tutoring agent uses common instructional methods that are augmented by social features to help students learn. Peoplia features pseudo-tutor assessments, free-text answering, personalized question generation, and adaptive question selection. It allows students to work both individually and col...

We present an approach for computer supported education in the form of a socially intelligent learning environment that is available online. It integrates problem solving and instructional materials into individual and group learning scenarios. A Wizard-of-Oz-driven computer tutor accompanies students to maintain their motivation within the learning environment. The agent can hold off-task conv...
متن کاملEnhancing Learning with Off-Task Social Dialogues
In Peoplia, a socially intelligent tutoring agent helps students learn by augmenting learning opportunities with social features. The tutoring agent engages in off-task conversations with the students before and after the instructional activities, motivating them to work with the system more successfully. We describe the tutor's architecture and early experiments in the domain of middle school ...
متن کاملThe Politeness Effect in an Intelligent Foreign Language Tutoring System
A previous study showed that pedagogical agents that offer feedback with appropriate politeness strategies can help students learn better [21]. This work studied the Politeness Effect in a foreign language intelligent tutoring system, and provided further evidence that tutorial feedback with socially intelligent strategies can influence motivation and learning outcomes.

Collaborative activities have been shown to be beneficial, provided that students exhibit certain positive behaviors. Unfortunately, these behaviors rarely occur spontaneously. Adaptive collaborative learning support (ACLS), where an intelligent system assesses student collaboration as it occurs and provides assistance when necessary, is a promising area of research that can help scaffold stude...
